June 2007

Along with the excitement of moving to Chicago and embarking on a road trip to and from California is the dirty work: packing.

For the most part, Bea has been “the packer.” I have been “the mover,” meaning all of the boxes that are now in our storage area on the second floor, I carried there from our fourth floor apartment.

Now our storage area is pretty full, so the rest of the boxes are going to stay on the fourth floor. Once the moving truck comes, we’ll have a dolly to get them all down, thank God.

I will say this: Moving makes you strong. It’s a good workout.

Last year, when we moved from West Roxbury to Dedham, doing all that moving got me in pretty good shape. So as hellacious as it is to move, at least there’s that.

What are you doing?

Bea and Mark (speaking in unison): We’re going on a cross-country trip.

Why?

Because we’re not sure if we’ll have a chance to do something like this again in our lives — a chance to see some great American landmarks, drive the country, and cling to our nomadic ways one last time before we settle down in Chicago.

Where is this trip taking you?

Well, here’s the map there and the map back. Of course, that just shows you our path, and not necessarily what we’ll see.

OK, so what will you see on the way there?

We’ll be stopping at the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, the Great Salt Lake, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, San Francisco (particularly for chocolate milkshakes at Taylor’s) and then down the Pacific Coast Highway.

What about on the way back?

Las Vegas (particularly for crepes at La Creperie at the Paris hotel), the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Colorado Springs, Denver, Omaha and Des Moines.

And I suppose you’ll be staying at various luxury hotels along the way.

We’re camping the whole way. A lot of the places we’re staying are at KOA sites.

What will you be doing in California while you’re staying there?

Mark will be working remotely; Bea is going to look for some kind of job in retail or as a florist. Our friends Jeff and Janine are getting married about a week after we get there, and we’ll be watching their house and dog when they go on their honeymoon a couple weeks after the wedding. In the meantime, we’ll be going to see Brian Regan perform, watch one or more Red Sox games when they’re in town to play the Angels, and who knows what else.

Finally, why the blog?

We hope this is a good way for family and friends to keep track of us as we travel around the country this summer. Plus, we figure it makes for a good online scrapbook that we can come back to and check out whenever we like.

Saturday, June 30: Leave Dedham, Mass. Stay in Cleveland or thereabouts that night.

Sunday, July 1: Arrive in Grand Beach, Mich. to drop off some of our things at Bea’s parents’ house.

Monday, July 2: Go to Chicago to look for an apartment to rent in August.

Friday, July 6: Leave Chicago for Temecula, Calif. (driving map coming soon)

Sunday, July 15: Arrive in Temecula, staying with Jeff “Chicken Legs” Sands, his fiancee Janine Saunders and their dog Harley.

Sunday, Aug. 19: Leave Temecula for Chicago (again, map coming soon).

Sometime later that week: Arrive in Chicago and begin our life there.
